  3.                   GRAPHICS GEMS READ ME

  5. Welcome to our CD-ROM. Along with this text file you will find a GEMPDF directory
  6. (folder) and operating system specific directories (folders). The GEMPDF
  7. directory (folder) contains the Acrobat data files. The  individual directories
  8. (folders) for  DOS, Macintosh, Windows and UNIX contain Acrobat Readers and a
  9. directory (folder) labeled APPENDIX. The APPENDIX directory (folder) contains
  10. source listings for that particular operating system.

  13. Installation for Macintosh:

  15. NOTE: If you use the font utility Suitcase¬, close all unnecessary font suitcases
  16. before running the Acrobat reader installer - if you have a large number of fonts
  17. open, the installer may crash.

  19. 1.) Open the folder called "Acrobat Reader 2.0."
  20. 2.) Double-click on the file "AcroRead.mac."
  21. 3.) The installer program will start and prompt you for further information.

  24. How to use this CD-ROM:
  25.  
  26. NOTE: If you need to learn about how to use the Acrobat Reader in general, 
  27. please see the "Reader Help" and the "Reader Tour" Acrobat files included on
  28. this CD-ROM.

  30. 1.) The basics: Acrobat presents a set of pull down menus and, below this,
  31. a tool bar. The pull downs -- File, Edit, View, Tools and Window -- are fairly 
  32. self evident and, in any case, the more useful functions are replicated in the
  33. tool bar.

  35. 2.) Getting started: You are initially presented with a "main" PDF file. 
  36. This is the launching point to all of the books included in the CD. We present 
  37. the user with a "book mark" view initially e.g.the screen is divided between a
  38. subject -- initially an image of the cover of the CD-ROM -- and, to the left, a
  39. list of book marks. Click on "Starting Point". This takes you to a main menu of
  40. books. Click on the book that you desire to browse.

  42. 3.) Using a book: You can change the presentation of the book in a number of
  43. ways. In the tool bar from the left, if the first (page) icon is clicked the 
  44. book mark will no longer be displayed. Clicking the next icon to the right will
  45. redisplay the book marks. The size of the page on the display can be altered by 
  46. either the "zoom" icons (+ & -) or the "page" icons to the right. When zoomed, 
  47. one can move the page around by using the "hand" icon or using the scroll bars.
  48. The recorder buttons (arrows) allow the user to navigate from page to page, start
  49. or end and fast forward or fast rewind.

  51. 4.) Finding things: There are several ways to find things other than simply 
  52. looking through the document page by page. Using the book mark you can select 
  53. CONTENTS and find hyperlinks to each content item. Similarly, the INDEX is also 
  54. hyperlinked to each indexed item. Finally, any keyword item that you may need 
  55. to search on is available through the "binocular" icon in the tool bar or "find" 
  56. selection found in the "tool" menu. For subsequent finds use the "find again" 
  57. function in the "tool" menu.

  59. Also, for each book in the book mark window, there is a "contributors" section
  60. which contains the names and locations of the contributing authors for the volume.

  62. NOTE: Each book is a single search area -- e.g. you CANNOT search across books.

  64. 5.) Printing: Acrobat allows you to print a single page or a range of pages by 
  65. simply selecting the "print" option from the "file" menu.
  66.  
  67. 6.) Source code: Each operating system directory (folder) contains not only a
  68. READER directory (folder) but also an APPENDIX directory (folder). Within this
  69. directory (folder) are a series of ASCII files containing source code used by
  70. the text, one or more readme files and errata files for errors in the
  71. source. Also here is a table of contents file relating the source files to the
  72. text pages where they are referenced.
